During the 1970's and 80's the British Government
reduced its funding to large and small companies, stopping most
of the training of their employees, resulting in fewer skilled people.
Together with two recessions and the amount of school leavers being
given the chance to do a true apprenticeship to near non-existence.
As we're sure you know, this has had a knock on effect right across
all industries, resulting in, after every recession, the position
being created by increased work are often unfilled, or are filled
by someone not fully trained for the job.
This has had a big effect on us. Due to our
high expansion rate, and being situated in what is traditionally
a rural community, we have found it very hard to find locally skilled
CNC machine setters and operators. To this end, we have structured
our own training programme right throughout the company.
We have a range of skill levels through every department
from CNC setters, VMC setters and Inspection. Training is
mainly done on-site with any special requirements done away at local
colleges or machine suppliers premises. We work on a three
month module system whereby an employee will be given a set part
of the job to learn and, when fully conversant with this, they are
then moved on to the next stage.
